But beyond these landmarks, there are other, lesser-known routes that reveal architectural and cultural gems that are also well worth your attention.

In this edition of the Musik Boutique Hotel’s Guide to Barcelona, we bring you a selection of various Modernist works in Barcelona that are less well-known than the major ones.

Works by Antoni Gaudí

Beyond his most famous works, Gaudí left his mark on some of Barcelona’s lesser-known corners. These works reveal different facets of the architect, where his creativity blends with symbolism, history, and, above all, originality.

Palau Güell

Just a short walk from Las Ramblas is the Palau Güell, which often goes unnoticed. This was one of Gaudí’s first major works, and its interior is an incredible spectacle of light and shapes. The dome in the main hall will leave you mesmerized, as will the rooftop with its colorful chimneys, which looks like something out of a dream. If you love Gaudí, this is a place you can’t miss.

Bellesguard Tower

The Bellesguard Tower is tucked away in the upper part of the city and blends Modernist architecture with medieval elements. Gaudí built this structure on the ruins of an old castle, and the result is spectacular. Its silhouette resembles a fortress; it also features rich symbolism and offers beautiful views. Plus, in the summer, it comes alive with music and a great atmosphere.

Casa Calvet

This house was designed for a textile entrepreneur, so the intention was to make it more understated and functional. Even so, Gaudí wanted to leave his mark: fluid forms, plant-inspired details, and handcrafted wrought iron. It’s located in the Eixample neighborhood, and although it isn’t as eye-catching as some of his other works, its balance of creative design and elegance makes it a must-see destination for fans of Modernism.

Notable Modernist Buildings

Modernist Barcelona wouldn’t be the same without the works of other incredible architects. All of these buildings stand out for their beauty, their artistic details, and the way they bring the city to life.

Casa Lleó Morera

This house, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, is part of the famous “Block of Discord.” The facade of this house is a riot of mosaics, flowers, and sculptures. Inside, a large stained-glass window floods the main living room with light, creating an atmosphere that blends art, design, and poetry.

Garriga Nogués House

Casa Garriga Nogués features a façade adorned with sculptures by Eusebi Arnau, and its curved stained-glass windows make it a serene and elegant example of Barcelona’s Modernism. In addition, it now hosts art exhibitions thanks to the MAPFRE Foundation. It is an ideal place to enjoy culture in an exceptional setting.

Amatller House

This building was designed by Puig i Cadafalch; it is located right next to Casa Batlló and blends Gothic and Modernist styles. It was once the home of chocolatier Antoni Amatller and still retains its original furnishings. Visiting it is like taking a trip back to the heart of the Catalan bourgeoisie of the early 20th century.

Cultural and Artistic Venues

In addition to architecture, Barcelona’s Modernism can also be experienced in cultural spaces steeped in history. From libraries to cafés, all of these places have a soul of their own and a strong connection to the creativity of that era.

Arús Library

This was the city’s first public library, located in the Eixample district. Its façade is unassuming, but it hides an interior steeped in history and symbolism. If you’re lucky enough to find it open, it’s a great place to take a quiet break in a setting full of character.

Els 4 Gats

This legendary café was long a gathering place for artists such as Picasso and Casas. Even today, you can still sit at one of its tables, order something, and feel like you’re part of the Modernist bohemian scene that defined an entire era.

A Different Way to Discover Barcelona

Exploring all these lesser-known Modernist works is a great way to see Barcelona from a different perspective: one that’s much more intimate, artistic, and authentic. Far from the hustle and bustle of the major monuments, these gems hide fascinating stories, unique details, and a closer connection to the city’s creative spirit. If you’re looking to be surprised and discover a different side of Barcelona, start with all these hidden treasures.

Less-Known Modernist Routes in Barcelona When people talk about Catalan Modernism, they always think of the Sagrada Família, La Pedrera, or Casa Batlló.
