Lesser-known modernist routes in Barcelona

When it comes to Catalan modernism, everyone thinks of the Sagrada Família, La Pedrera, or Casa Batlló. But beyond these iconic works lie other, less-trodden paths that reveal architectural and cultural gems just as deserving of your attention.
In this edition of the Musik Boutique Hotel’s Barcelona Guide, we’re bringing you a curated selection of modernist buildings in Barcelona that remain under the radar.

Works by Antoni Gaudí

Beyond his most famous creations, Gaudí also left his mark in lesser-explored corners of Barcelona. These works show different sides of the architect, where creativity merges with symbolism, history, and above all, originality.

Palau Güell

Just a short walk from Las Ramblas, Palau Güell often goes unnoticed. One of Gaudí’s earliest major works, its interior is a stunning spectacle of light and form. The dome in the main hall is hypnotic, and the rooftop—decorated with colorful chimneys—feels like something out of a dream. If you love Gaudí, this is an unmissable stop.

Torre Bellesguard

Hidden in the upper part of the city, Torre Bellesguard fuses modernist architecture with medieval references. Gaudí built it atop the ruins of an old castle, and the result is striking. Its silhouette resembles a fortress, rich in symbolism and boasting beautiful views. In summer, the space fills with music and good vibes.

Casa Calvet

Designed for a textile entrepreneur, this house was meant to be more sober and functional. Even so, Gaudí couldn’t resist adding his touch: flowing shapes, botanical details, and artisanal ironwork. Located in the Eixample district, it may not be as flashy as his other projects, but its balance between creative design and elegance makes it a must-see for modernism fans.

Standout modernist buildings

Modernist Barcelona wouldn’t be the same without the contributions of other brilliant architects. These buildings stand out for their beauty, artistic detail, and the way they breathe life into the city.

Casa Lleó Morera

Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, this house is part of the famous “Block of Discord.” Its façade is a burst of mosaics, floral elements, and sculptures. Inside, a massive stained-glass window fills the main room with light, creating an atmosphere of artistry, design, and poetry.

Casa Garriga Nogués

The façade of Casa Garriga Nogués features sculptures by Eusebi Arnau, and its curved stained-glass windows make it a serene and elegant example of Barcelona modernism. Today, it houses art exhibitions thanks to the MAPFRE Foundation. A perfect spot to enjoy culture in a stunning setting.

Casa Amatller

This building by Puig i Cadafalch sits right next to Casa Batlló and blends Gothic and modernist styles. It was once home to chocolatier Antoni Amatller and still holds much of its original furniture. A visit feels like a journey into the heart of early 20th-century Catalan bourgeoisie.

Cultural and artistic spaces

Modernism in Barcelona also lives on in cultural spaces filled with history. From libraries to cafés, each place has its own soul and a strong link to the creativity of that era.

Arús Library

This was Barcelona’s first public library, located in the Eixample. Its façade is modest, but the interior holds a wealth of history and symbolism. If you’re lucky enough to find it open, it’s a peaceful yet character-filled spot for a break.

Els 4 Gats

This legendary café was once a regular hangout for artists like Picasso and Casas. Even today, you can sit at one of its tables, order something, and feel like part of the modernist bohemia that shaped an entire era.
